AgustaWestland chopper rip-off: ED to query intermediary Christian Michel inside Tihar Jail

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) will query AgustaWestland chopper deal rip-off accused Christian Michel in reference to a cash laundering case lodged towards him. The questioning will happen on Monday (May 25) and Tuesday contained in the Tihar jail as per a Delhi court docket order.

“Considering the requirement of the investigation and the sensitive nature of the case, the court finds it appropriate to allow investigative officers to interrogate the accused in Tihar Jail itself, wherein the accused is presently lodged, being in judicial custody in this case,” learn the order copy.

Three ED officers have been allowed to query Christian Michel James within the presence of Tihar Jail Superintendent from 10.00 am to 1.30 pm and from 2.30 pm to five.00 pm.

Christian Michel has been allowed to take authorized help and recommendation from his lawyer from 2.00 pm to 2.30 pm on each days.

Christian Michel, a British arms vendor and intermediary within the AgustaWestland chopper deal, was arrested within the UAE after which extradited to India in December 2018.

According to the ED, investigation within the AgustaWestland case revealed that kickbacks from AgustaWestland amounting to Euro 70 million had been routed via middlemen. Of the overall quantity, Carlo Gerosa and Guido Haschke obtained Euro 28 million and Christian Michel James obtained Euro 42 million to affect the contract for the provision of 12 VVIP Helicopters.

Several defence officers, bureaucrats and politicians from then UPA authorities are underneath the ED probe for receiving kickbacks in trade of approving the VVIP chopper offers.
